Johanna is Stureplansgruppen's major new opening in Gothenburg, a steakhouse and rooftop bar housed in one of the city's most striking locations. The name carries history: Restaurang Johanna first opened in 1974 on Södra Larmgatan, run by chefs Leif Mannerström and Crister Svantesson, and remains a cherished reference point in Gothenburg's restaurant scene. The task was to build an identity that could carry that legacy forward while introducing something entirely new.
Our approach was to let the kitchen's direction lead the visual language. A steakhouse calls for a certain weight and confidence, so we drew a bespoke wordmark and symbol built on bold, upright typography and a color scale rooted in deep reds, signaling fire, meat and craft without tipping into cliché. At the same time, we wanted the identity to hold a premium tone worthy of both the name's history and the exceptional venue Stureplansgruppen is opening. The collision between steakhouse tradition, French technique and the weight of history became a creative starting point in itself, something we carried into the visual world by mixing painterly techniques, oil and acrylic, in how dishes and drinks are portrayed.
In a project like this, the difference sits in the details. Throughout the process we worked closely with Stureplansgruppen's own creative team, refining everything from the seal and typography down to coasters, menus and the smallest touchpoints of the guest experience. The result is a system built around a distinct seal and a clear framework that lets the restaurant and its rooftop terrace speak with related but distinguishable voices, sharing one identity while each holding its own color palette and mood. From menu to matchbook, the identity gives Johanna a language as confident as the kitchen behind it.
